THIS HOUSE AT 57A Strand Road is a lesson in cool, contemporary design. Low on frills, the quality of the materials and workmanship take centre stage. Rich solid walnut supplied by Murdocks of Newry (murdockgroup.com) gives warmth and depth to the room and costs around €60 a sq m. FKL Architects (01-4736 350) designed the room where the walnut is used to clad the clever low storage units along the wall which double as benches. The Celsius gas fire is from Hearth and Home (01-620 0100) .
The lighting design uses concealed fittings around the windows and roof lights, and is supplemented by lamps on 5amp circuits which are controlled from the main light switches. This frees the ceiling from grids of downlights and focuses the eye on the long dimensions of the room. The concealed fittings around the windows have a soothing glow and are standard inexpensive low energy fluorescent batten fittings which can incorporate tungsten corrective filters. Try National Lighting (01-709 9070).
The furniture comes from Upstage (01-634 8118) .The cream boxy sofa comes in different styles and fabrics and costs from €2,500, the coffee table is € 860 while the rug is €460. The paintings by Fiona Considine incorporate the colours of the room and cost from €300.
