1930s classic with a modern twist

Sympathetic extensions have added space to this house in Loughlinstown, while its original features, including pine flooring, have been retained

The current owners of number 5 Cherrywood Road are in need of a larger house as their six children, ranging in age from eight to 17, are growing up. When the couple first moved to the property 15 years ago, they had two children and by the time of their first renovation, which increased the number of bedrooms from three to six, they had five children under the age of five.

The extensions included a large kitchen-cum-diningroom to the rear and a side extension with three bedrooms over two floors. The house, now standing at 232sq m (2,500sq ft), is a handsome light-filled family home with four reception rooms, on one third of an acre of landscaped gardens.

Extensions

Constructed in 1932, the house retains all its original features and the extensions have been sympathetically and seamlessly integrated into the original structure.

To the rear is a large solid pine kitchen with quarry tiled flooring and a pine-clad vaulted ceiling, with access to the rear patio and garden. There is an adjacent informal dining area where the family of eight dine each evening.

To the front the house also has a more formal diningroom which opens to the drawing room via the original sliding doors. Both rooms originally had small fireplaces, which the new owners replaced with more generous hearths.

The first floor is divided into two wings; one for the boys and another for the girls. The boys’ rooms are painted in cool duck egg blues and the girls’ have warm pink accents.

The sixth bedroom, which is en-suite, is on the second floor and offers lots of storage in the eaves.

All the rooms, bar the kitchen, have original pine flooring which is in perfect condition. In fact there is very little evidence that such a large family live here as the house is in turnkey condition, and the many clever storage facilities alllow sports kits and the like to be hidden away.

The rear garden is lovingly laid out with areas for children to play and adults to unwind.

Number 5, in great condition, will suit a large family. It is for sale through estate agent Hunters with an asking price of €845,000.
