Art deco house in Clonskeagh for €1.55m

Semi-detached 1930s house with four bedrooms

Vergemount Park is a quiet cul-de-sac of 18 houses, 16 of them art deco in style, all of them proudly preserved and creating a pleasantly detached, tree-lined niche in Clonskeagh.

The vendor bought number 7 Vergemount Park eight years ago when it was, she says, “a 1930s house in every way, with a galley kitchen and makeshift bathroom”. A lot of care, patience and appreciation has been put into the house since then, notably in 2010 when it was renovated, and restored, had a large extension added to the rear and another level added in the roof space.

This is a delightful house to view and has been, the vendor assures, “a delightful house to live in. All your needs are satisfied – plus it’s insulated and very warm. I tried, with the renovation, to get as near to its art deco-style as possible, to be true to the original proportions”.

The result is a bright house in which the distinctive metal windows have been double-glazed and reworked in Aluclad; and where original doors, picture rails, tiled fireplaces, curves and covings around ceilings, ornate stair banisters and art deco mood are all intact.

A large house, the floor area covers 253sq m (2,723sq ft) on three levels, it is now too large for the vendor who is downsizing. There are four bedrooms (two en suite), two reception rooms, a kitchen/diningroom, family bathroom, utility and shower rooms. A thriving rear garden is full of colour and the front garden has off-street parking. Agent Lisney is asking €1.5 million for the private treaty sale. The vendor bought for € 1 million in 2008.

Removing the ceiling in the entrance hallway to create an atrium was an inspired idea and gives a real sense of space and elegance. The tulip-motif banisters were recreated to continue a link with the new, third level where there is a bedroom (or studio space) with en suite. The main, rear-facing bedroom, has a walnut floored dressing room and walk-in en suite shower.

The ground-floor drawingroom has an ornately tiled, functioning fireplace. A front window fills a wall, and fills the room with light, and a picture rail and curve of ceiling add period elegance. The adjoining family room, accessed through sliding doors, has similar features. The contemporary kitchen/diningroom is a rear addition and another bright space.  Patio doors open to a raised and railed patio with Indian granite tiling.
