LOOKS LIKE the first phase in a new era has begun that will distance us from the hoary old days of fast-talking unregulated auctioneers and estate agents. They’re unlikely to be known by these terms in the future.

The Society of Chartered Surveyors (SCSI) has just launched a campaign encouraging sellers to ensure they enlist the services of a chartered surveyor for the sale or rental of homes.

Surveyors, who have not traditionally been associated with residential property services here, have moved into this space following a merger last year between the Society of Chartered Surveyors and the Irish Auctioneers and Valuers Institute (IAVI).

As chartered surveyors, the society promises that all members will be “highly trained, qualified, and regulated professionals who operate to the highest ethical code”.

They promise to fight the good fight for us on all property and construction-related issues. No small challenge there.

“Check they’re chartered” will be the key message of the new advertising campaign.
