It could be readily dismissed as overly vast but this six-bedroom property in Malahide has the potential to be a fine family home

Blackwood Lodge is a behemoth house. Situated in a development of about 10 detached homes, it was built in 2000 and measures 653sq m (7,029sq ft). It was purchased and finished by the current owner in 2002.

An early Tiger years build, it could be readily dismissed as overly vast. In real life it looks and feels far warmer than in the pictures and it has the potential to be a fine family home .

It has a double-height hallway with a cantilevered staircase drawing the eye up, past the open fireplace. The kitchen is sizeable and features maple units with a large island, black granite countertops and built-in breakfast seating. Double doors connect this room to the formal diningroom and on into the sitting room – each of these have French doors out to the huge lawn which gets all-day sunshine.

This is big enough for a professional to set up business from home and create a separate entrance through the garage. It could also become a granny flat and there is scope to install a staircase in the garage to connect it to the first-floor games room.

Upstairs there are six bedrooms, divided into what the owners call – tongue firmly in cheek – a west wing, where there are four bedrooms, and an east wing where there are another two.

The owners are asking €2.95 million. So who’s going to buy it? Wayne O’Brien, senior negotiator at DNG Fairview, thinks it would suit a footballer or it may be sold to an international buyer. He sold a 10,000sq ft (929sq m) French chateau-style house in Abbington to Robbie Keane about two years ago for €1.6 million.

Blackwood Lodge is bigger but it has a price tag of almost double that.

Set on an acre of grounds that wrap around the back of the house, it’s big enough to play a decent game of five aside.

In winter you can see the Fairways of Malahide Golf Club but the growth on the trees in summer obscures it.
