Wooded bliss in Greystones for €1.375m

This five-bedroom detached house on half an acre has been a family home for more than 40 years. With some refurbishment and redecoration, it could be restored to its former glory

A large lawned garden with lots of hidden wooded areas is one of the nicest things about a detached Edwardian house on a quiet road in The Burnaby, Greystones, Co Wicklow.

On one side stands a timber gazebo, on another a converted garage used as a studio where art classes are taught. There are other sheds dotting the half-acre spread and just when you think you’ve seen it all, you find a timber swing set hidden away in more woodland.

Fairfield has been a family home for more than 40 years and needs considerable refurbishment to make the most of its Edwardian elegance.

The 3,170sq ft (295sq m) five-bedroom house on Somerby Road – a road in easy walking distance of Greystones’s main street and the Dart station – is for sale by private treaty through Sherry FitzGerald for €1,375,000.

Its good period details – timber sash windows, bright rooms with windows at front and side, unfussy decorative ceiling plasterwork, original red-and- black tiles on a verandah and in a small conservatory, timber fireplaces with cast-iron and tile insets – remain.

But overall, the house needs redecoration and in some rooms, repair to peeling plaster.

One of the best rooms is the diningroom to the right of the front hall. In one corner of this room is a quirky period detail: a half-door opens into a fully-shelved small cupboard – called a bar in the brochure – used for storing dishes and glasses.

The main reception rooms – a drawingroom and sittingroom connected by original sliding doors – are to the left of the front hall. A large bay window in the drawingroom overlooks the front of the house and double doors open at the side onto a tiled, covered verandah. The sittingroom/libary has doors into the small conservatory with its original tiles.

There’s a traditional arch in the front hall leading to the back of the house, where there has been some modernisation: a family room opens into a modern kitchen with cream-coloured timber cabinets and granite countertops, and a utility room opening off it. There’s also a modern tiled shower-room downstairs.

Upstairs, there’s a 1970s-style family bathroom and a room used as a dressingroom on the return.

Five bedrooms – most of them doubles, one with an en suite – open off the top landing.
