Shopfront: Hilary Ross Murphy used to own the Cuba clothing store on Trinity Street, the first store to sell New York-based Irish designer Daryl Kerrigan at home.
Last Christmas she decided to use her contacts in the retail world and her fashion buyer's eye to offer a gift-buying service. It might seem a bit flamboyant to employ a personal shopper, and you could well wonder what is the purpose of gift-giving if the present isn't chosen by you. But many people must buy gifts of obligation - and Ross Murphy is back offering her service again this year.
The idea is that you call and tell her you want a number of gifts and Ross Murphy comes up with ideas and has your final selection delivered to your door along with all receipts. Despite the fashion background, interior and homeware goods are one of Ross Murphy's new passions as she has just bought her first home.
It is common sense, but she advises that when buying a homey gift, stay away from anything too personal unless you know the person's taste very well. Instead, she recommends "perishables" or accessories: scented candles, plants, hand creams or soaps. "It's all about giving things people wouldn't think of buying for themselves," says Ross Murphy. The most successful presents she has bought recently include a vide poche (dish for hall table in which to empty pockets of keys, money, etcetera), Bereville panini-maker, scented drawer liners or Muji laundry baskets. A half day shopping for three to five gifts will cost €80; a full day for six to 10 costs €150.
