One of Dublin's landmark bars, the Horse Show House opposite the RDS in Ballsbridge, looks like staying in business for some time, now that the city planners have turned down yet another planning application to replace it with an office building. The Madigan group had planned to retain the adjoining listed house but to demolish the pub and put a five-storey office block with basement car-park in its place. The planners are having none of it, holding that even a five-storey block in this area would "present an incongruous picture which would be seriously detrimental to the architectural composition and streetscape of this section of Merrion Road". We'll drink to that.
