Sorrento Road: €3m: A detached Victorian house on Sorrento Road in Dalkey, Co Dublin, is expected to make over the advised minimum value (AMV) of €3 million being quoted by Colliers Jackson-Stops prior to auction on May 11th.
Built in the 1850s, the house was named Kalafat, after a town on the Danube where the builder's nephew was killed during the Crimean War.
Today, it's an attractive family home with five bedrooms and a separate two-bedroom flat to the rear.
The 345sq m (3,500sq ft) corner house, with a large south-facing garden in front and ample parking at the back, has many period features, and a recently-installed stained glass window on the landing and intricately gilding ceiling cornices in the diningroom.
A square hall big enough for a party leads into a sittingroom to the left with Georgian sash windows in two walls. There is a sense of times past in the house and prettily-planted spring garden, with old trees, wide granite steps, window seats to sit and dream on, old fireplaces and ceiling cornices.
Upstairs are four good rooms all with views of either Dalkey Hill or towards Dalkey Island. Downstairs in the basement there are two more bedrooms, livingroom and kitchen, while the main kitchen is at hall level, just across from the diningroom.
There is a new bathroom off the landing return, and shower room and utility room downstairs. The back of the house has been added to in a contemporary style to make a two-bedroom apartment with its own front door.
