Bold and brash, the twin children's room in the penthouse in Wyckham Place in Dundrum was designed by Smithfield-based interior design company Velvet (01 8748784). Star of the show are the blue and red bedspreads shipped in from the United States. But if you're smitten, you can pick them up from Velvet. Prices start at €200 for a single cotton throw and €350 for a double. The smart French oak beds are from Belgium and again can be purchased from Velvet, price €500. Matching bureaus cost €1,200. To complete the look get Colortrend's Citadel Blue for the walls, €48 for a 5l tin from MRCB Paints in Dublin 8 (01 6798755). Matching custom-made stools cost €250, also from Velvet.

124 Upper Leeson Street is a fine example of how a modern makeover of a period home can make for easy elegance. The impressive diningroom is the essence of understated luxury.

If you like the look of the sleek dining table, get to De Barra and Considine's new showrooms in Kilcoole, Co Wicklow (01 2149938). Called a Neo dining table, it comes in a dark wood stain, as pictured here, as well as a lighter driftwood stain. It's imported from Indonesia and costs €795. Matching neo chairs are priced at €210. To complete the look, get the Neo console, price €575.

Glamorous pink and gold is the colour palette for the main bedroom in 4 Moyne Road, Ranelagh, D6. The walls are painted pastel pink: for something similar try Crown's Mademoiselle (around €48 for a 5l tin) or Colortrend's Chinoiserie, €48 for a 5l tin from MRCB Paints in Dublin 8 (01 6798755).

A real touch of glamour was added with gold leaf treatment of the picture rail and mantelpiece. Gold leaf doesn't come cheap and the cost of the materials alone for this room was around the €1,200 mark. But it does add a real touch of splendour to the room. The gold leaf was purchased from Martin-Hudson & Gibson Ltd, Sandycove, Co Dublin (01 2843486). Books of 25 sheets of gold leaf cost €30. Unlike anything you will buy in a tin, the gold leaf sheets have a metal content ensuring that the gold colour will not fade to brown. For the finishing touches get the French painted mahogany dressing table and stool by Badelini from The Bottom Drawer in Brown Thomas (01 6056666) for €1,490.
