Monkstown: €3.75mA double-fronted period house remains true to its 1840s heritage, writes Eivlín Roden
A double-fronted, two storey over basement, period house in Vesey Place sits opposite a rolling park with old trees, halfway between Monkstown and Dún Laoghaire
Number 5 is for auction on June 14th with an AMV of €3.75 million through Lisney. The next door house sold recently by private treaty in the region of €4.25 million.
This house, which had some extensions and a renovated mews, remains true to its 1840s' roots. It comes with cobbled stable yard and original stable block in very good condition and gardens that have been lovingly tended over many years.
Most of the living quarters are at hall and first floor level, with a great dual aspect kitchen running the depth of the house to the right of the wide hall, and a large drawing room and study to the left.
The study, to the front, is a square room with cheery red walls and marble fireplace.
A wide window with window seat is the outstanding feature of the drawingroom, which has polished floor boards, period fireplace and ornate cornices.
Painted decoration was discovered under layers of paper on the walls and restored. These rooms and a cloakroom at the back benefit from a lot of light and the pretty gardens are framed in every window.
The original proportions and features of the kitchen have not been tampered with. The room centres on a red Aga and has pale painted units: there is lots of room here for a sofa and large table.
Upstairs, five bedrooms are grouped around the spacious landing. Two of them are large, two are good doubles and one is a cosy single.
The family bathroom on the first floor return is reached by a landing with triple arched window.
The garden level can be cut off by a door and has its own entrances. At this level is a sixth bedroom and three study/sitting rooms, a bathroom and wine cellar.
The house, lived in by its present owners for more than 25 years, makes a wonderful family home.
Outside, the front garden has pedestrian access with vehicle access at the back from the mews. The garden wall is painted a warm pink and has an inset statue of Joan of Arc. Here there is a garage and stable with a large loft above.
