Galway entrepreneur, Pat McDonagh has emerged as the buyer of Renville House on the shores of Galway Bay. The owner of the Supermac’s chain of Irish fast food outlets, and one of Ireland’s richest businessmen broke auction records last month when he paid €3.2million (€1.2million above the guide price) for the fine ivy-clad Georgian property on 135 acres.
Located close to Oranmore village, outside Galway city, Renville is one of the finest period properties to come on the market in Galway in recent years. The sale of the five bed property with water frontage and traditional farm buildings, was hotly contested. Four bidders chased up the price until it was finally sold through auctioneer Paddy Jordan to a solicitor acting in trust.
McDonagh and his wife Una live in Galway from where they operate the nationwide Supermac’s chain with annual sales of around €100million. Supermac’s is also lead sponsor to the Galway county hurling and football teams.

It’s understood that following some refurbishment the McDonaghs plan to use Renville House for permanent residential use.
The house was built in the 1820s by the Blakes, one of so called Tribes of Galway. It was lived in by the family until the 20th century when it was sold to the Lydon family who were the sellers at auction last month.
Located close to Galway Bay and Country golf club, the house is surrounded by pastureland. A half mile avenue leads through the grounds to the front door of the two-storey house which has a number of fine reception rooms at ground floor level.
