CO WICKLOW: €675,000AN EXTENDED traditional railway cottage in Kilcoole, within the sound of the sea, is for sale by private treaty through Hassett for a sum in the region of €675,000.

The three-bedroom cottage with a floor area of 111.4sq m (1,200sq ft) is on a half-acre of garden with only the railway line and a quiet cul-de-sac dividing it from the strand.

Painted ocean blue, the house has been extended to form three sides of a square into a back garden looking onto a bird sanctuary and with views of the Sugarloaf, after which the cottage is named.

The cottage is reached through a small car-park at the end of Sea Road and its front does not give any idea of the extent of the property. Built in the 1860s, it was originally used for herding sheep from the railway to the fields at the back which is evidenced by the high half door, extra wide hall and back door straight at the end. A very pretty drawingroom with original painted fire surround and copper hood has a high coved ceiling, a long casement window and French door to the back garden, one of several sets of double doors to this enormous private space.

It is a traditionally laid out cottage with a door from the livingroom opening to the bedrooms.

The main bedroom, a fine square room, has built-in wardrobes and a high arched ceiling. Two smaller bedrooms also open off this little inner hall. A new owner may wish to extend this to add a bathroom as the family bathroom is at the other end of the cottage.

On the other side of the hallway, a large kitchen/familyroom has part wood, part tiled floor with original cast-iron fireplace, fitted units, window to the front and double doors to the back. Beyond is a utility room, a large family bathroom and a sunroom with doors to the garden. Most of the floors are timber, all windows are double glazed and there is oil-fired central heating.

Outside, besides the terrific back garden, there is space at the side for parking and a long garage.
