THE DRAWINGROOM in Sorrento Villa, Dalkey has a gorgeous, early Victorian, white marble fireplace which comes complete with carved corbels and an ornate central panel.
The owners bought this from David O’Reilly Antique Fireplace Restorations (01-454 4101) on Dublin’s Francis Street. Expect to pay from €15,000 upwards for something similar.
The room is painted a tomato red, a colour that works especially well in the east-facing room. Try Kenya Intense from Crown’s Colours of the World Collection for a similar effect.
A gilt over-mantle mirror adds a classic look to the room and its metallic mood is echoed in the brass fender, from Buckley’s of Sandycove. The house has smart sliding sash windows throughout, which were all replaced by Armagh-based Annvale Joinery Works (048 3752 6555). Expect to pay an average price of €662 per double-glazed window.
The original front door was replaced by a traditional-style door with glazed panels to allow the owners to make the most of their sea views. DJ Murray and Son Joinery near Bandon in west Cork (023-49529) specialises in period joinery and is registered with the Georgian Society. A front door like this will cost about €1,000.
In the hall of Sorrento Villa, spring has sprung early. The floral mural is bang on trend with its vibrant palette and exotic birds adding an upbeat mood. The design was created by artist Naomi Peppard, whose work can be seen at Dalkey Arts (01-284 9663).
While a full-time painter, she has engaged in several private wall art commissions and is available for consultations regarding future projects.
The mural is painted directly onto the wall and overlaid with a wipeable varnish to protect it.
The Chinoiserie-style is bright and airy and might in fact be more affordable than some of the silk wallpapers offering similar styles of imagery. This piece cost in the region of €1,800 to design, draw and execute.
