Design, height and scale went against Blackrock scheme: Five months after An Bord Pleanála refused permission for a development of 11 detached houses in the grounds of Ferndene on Deansgrange Road in Blackrock, Co Dublin, the developer John O'Connor has been refused planning permission by Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council for 30 apartments in three curved blocks on the site.

One of the reasons given was that the proposed development would, because of its design, height, scale and the positioning of blocks in close proximity to the existing dwelling "visually dominate and detract from the character and setting of the existing dwelling". It also said the proposed development would be contrary to the provisions of the Development Plan because of a lack of provision for social and affordable housing.

Castlepark school upgrades

After being refused planning permission for a development of 81 townhouses and apartments in its grounds last month, Castlepark school in Dalkey, Co Dublin, has got the green light from An Bord Pleanála to redevelop and extend its school facilities.

However it remains to be seen whether the refusal of permission for the residential scheme will affect the progress of the school re-development. It is believed that the school had struck a deal with a consortium of developers, led by David Arnold, that the site would be sold to them for a figure in the region of €10 million subject to planning permission being granted for the residential scheme. The proceeds were to contribute towards the redevelopment of the school .

The school has been granted permission to build a 46,000sq m (495,139sq ft) development with 39 classrooms, an indoor swimming pool, assembly hall, PE hall, caretaker's flat and 90 surface parking spaces.
