New synagogue for Dublin 6W: Terenure Hebrew Congregations is looking to build a 292-seat replacement synagogue and 35 apartments on the Rathfarnham Road in Dublin 6W.
This will involve the demolition of an existing synagogue, caretaker's lodgings, security kiosk, gates, and two single storey sheds. A single storey synagogue of 424.5 sq m (4,570 sq ft) and three blocks of residential units front the site with basement car-parking for 35 cars.
The new synagogue is to be built for two Orthodox Jewish congregations at Leoville on the Rathfarnham Road in Terenure, Dublin 6. The two dwindling congregations decided to amalgamate several years ago. The Jewish population has fallen from its post-war peak of 5,000 to around 1,000 today. Three-quarters of that number are aged over 50.
Adelaide Road synagogue closed in 1999 after 107 years of worship. It served what was once Ireland's largest Jewish population on the South Circular Road. It was sold for a figure believed to be in the region of €7.87 million to Galway developer Frank O'Malley of O'Malley Construction.
Museum plans more space
The OPW is to lodge a planning application for the latest phase of the National Museum at Collins Barracks, Dublin 7. This time it is looking to extend the museum substantially.
This will involve a 703 sq m (7,567 sq ft) extension on two levels from the north-east corner of Clarke Square towards Arbour Hill to house exhibition galleries. It is also looking to build a 192 sq m (2,067 sq ft) infill extension of 249 sq m (2,680 sq ft) over the existing single storey link building at the north-east corner of Clarke Square to house a lift, toilets and plantroom, plus renovations and alterations to the ground and first floor of the north block of Clarke Square.
