Dublin City Council's decision to grant permission for an Aldi store in Rathmines has been appealed to An Bord Pleanála.

Dublin City Council's decision to grant permission for an Aldi store in Rathmines has been appealed to An Bord Pleanála.

Aldi was granted planning permission to open a store on the site of the former Rathmines Capital Hotel on the Lower Rathmines Road in Dublin 6 in November. The decision came as a surprise to industry sources who thought Aldi's planning application might be hampered by a lack of car-parking in the area.

Local Fianna Fail councillor Mr Gary Keegan, and the Rathmines Town Centre Management Committee have appealed the board's decision. The submission states that there remain "a lot of unanswered questions regard the terms of the planning". Pointing out that there are general parking problems in the area, the group said there is no provision for car-parking or for shopping trolley storage in the plan. It also says there have been no assurances that the shop will not ultimately operate on a 24-hour basis. Aldi plans turn the ground floor and basement, formerly Savannah Café Bar and Club, into a 1,349 sq m (14,520 sq ft) discount foodstore.
