Synagogue gets permission
Terenure Hebrew Congregation has been granted permission for a replacement 292-seat Synagogue at Rathfarnham Road, Dublin 6W. There will also be 35 residential apartments over a basement car-park. The plan involves the demolition of existing buildings including a synagogue, caretaker's lodge, security kiosk and gates, and two single storey storage sheds.
The new synagogue is for two Orthodox Jewish congregations at Leoville on the Rathfarnham Road in Terenure, D6. The congregations amalgamated several years ago. The Jewish population has fallen from its post-war peak of 5,000 to around 1,000. Adelaide Road synagogue closed in 1999 after 107 years.
