Council says yes to heritage centre at Glasnevin cemeteryDublin City Council has green-lighted a heritage centre for Glasnevin cemetery. The three-storey centre will have an exhibition area, lecture theatre and cafeteria, and will involve restoration of the former Superintendents Lodge on the Finglas Road, which will be used as an office.

The plan involves moving a public bus stop on Finglas Road, the widening of entrance gates into the cemetery and the refurbishment of 19th century gates, railings and stone boundary wall onto Finglas Road. The centre is part of a €25 million 10-year plan to refurbish the cemetery in time for the centenary of the 1916 Rising. Earlier this year the Taoiseach Bertie Ahern said the overhaul of the cemetery will make the graveyard "one of the nation's greatest visitor attractions".

The project will be carried out in conjunction with the Office of Public Works with funding of €2.5 million per annum being provided from the National Development Plan over the next 10 years. Part of the work involves the restoration of protected structures, including the O'Connell Monument and Mortuary Chapel, as well as several gravestones of significant architectural and historical importance.
