This is the new BMW X5. While it is not a radical departure from the previous model, it is significantly bigger than the current edition, introduced seven years ago.
While the exterior has received only minor adjustment, the major difference is in the fact that the new model will come with an optional third-row of seats, finally overcoming a major hurdle in X5 family sales and putting it in line with the likes of the Volvo XC90 and the recently arrived Audi Q7.
As with competitors, however, the rearmost seats are more for children and teenagers than adults. According to reports from BMW, development of the new SUV has centred around refining its on-road handling.
Engine choices at launch will be a 3-litre 231bhp six-cylinder diesel and 272bhp petrol, plus a 355bhp 4.8-litre V8. It's also rumoured that BMW are preparing to launch a petrol-electric hybrid in the next 12 months.
The new X5 will make its debut at the Paris motor show next month, with customers taking delivery in Ireland from April 28th next year. Prices are: €78,750 for the 3.0i SE; €79,400 for the 3.0d SE diesel version; and €102,950 for the 4.8i SE.
