Peugeot has revealed a new concept, the 908 RC, that features not only the French firm's new Le Mans challenging diesel engine, but also hints at the future look of the replacement for its ageing 607 flagship.
The name comes from Peugeot's racing car that's set to challenge the recent diesel success at Le Mans by Audi. That's the engine connection as the new concept features the French firm's newly-developed 5.5-litre V12 HDi DPFS engine. This puts out 700bhp and manages an incredible 1,200Nm of torque.
Peugeot was clearly embarrassed by the success of Audi's diesel at Le Mans last year, given the French firm's long history and experience with diesel engines. They are out for revenge next year.
The exterior design, however, is a luxury four-door executive car with a tapered design at the front of the vehicle. The distinctive look is a world apart from the current 607, but bears some resemblance to Citroën's new C8, particularly at the back with its tapered rear window (see road test of C8: page 8).
If it gets the go-ahead, several of the more racing features, such as the ultra-low spoilers and 20" wheels will not survive the move from concept to production, but the general styling may well remain. While this is only a concept and we must await confirmation of a 607 replacement, it's likely that any road-going versions will be powered by parent company PSA's 2.7-litre HDI diesel and the 3-litre petrol to start with.
But with Peugeot's expertise in diesel technology, other power units cannot be ruled out.
