Constant satisfaction - at a cost

These days, he is likely to be otherwise engaged for some time after seeing a car like this on his forecourt. It's a pity, because of all the convertibles, the SLK is among the best. A driver's car, it offers constant feedback and satisfaction.

Designed to freshen Mercedes' ageing profile, the original SLK wasn't great. It was only when the second generation was launched in 2004 that glitches were sorted out.

It is, of course, a two-seater. The retracting roof offers protection in winter, and rattles are minimal compared to its rivals. Some models even have the patented "air-scarf" system, which cleverly circulates warm air around the necks of both driver and passenger. The interior is well finished and instrumentation is bright and modern. In short, it has everything you want from a convertible.

There is a choice of engines but the most popular one is the 2-litre kompressor - one of Mercedes' best, with plenty of power and flexibility, especially for a car of its size. Most have a manual gearbox, but an automatic is preferable for town driving, where the SLK is quite at home.

It was originally tested for the EuroNCAP crash programme in 2002, when it scored four stars. The 2004 model would probably have made the five-star rating, but it has not been re-tested. The safety package includes ABS and stability control.

The SLK is also reliable - there have been no major recalls, suggesting Mercedes got the package right. Reassuringly, there have not been any persistent problems with the roof mechanism. Servicing, however, can be expensive, as can running costs.

A 2006 model with petrol engine, alloys, leather seats, automatic gearbox, multiple airbags and just 45,000km on the clock is on offer at one garage for €35,950. A 2007 car with similar equipment and 29,000km is €48,000. Both prices highlight the SLK's biggest disadvantage - it was always overpriced. It's these prices and the running costs that lower its rating.
