THE MOTORING world bid a sad farewell to Sunday Business Post motoring correspondent Ferdia O’Dowd this week.

A highly respected motoring journalist and ardent road safety campaigner, he spent his early life working on his family’s farm in Clondalkin, west Dublin, and retained a lifelong interest in agriculture, writing for the Irish Farmer’s Journal.

He went on to report extensively on a spate of animal deaths in Askeaton, near Limerick, in the late 1990s, which turned into a major industrial health issue.

But his lifelong passions were for cars and travel, and he loved regaling people with tales of fast motors and exotic locations.

Late last year, he was diagnosed with motor neurone disease. He passed away last Thursday.
