In layman's terms the CV joints allow the drive axles to follow the turning motion of the wheels and front suspension, keeping a constant speed at various angles when the car turns.

These Constant Velocity (CV) joints have been known to be prone to some problems.

Eventually, the joints either wear or leak oil around the flexible rubber boots that cover them.
