WHAT'S ON THE MARKET (iii): Those at the back of the class will remember the days when "a 500" was the only choice. There were smaller bikes - 125s or 350s, but you hadn't 'arrived' until you owned a 500, or better still a 650.

Times have changed and bikes are vastly improved. Many are now much

larger and more powerful. Yet a 500 to 650 cc machine still gives most

riders everything they need.

There is wide range of 500 cc to 650 cc machines available,

usually with power outputs in the region of 50bhp (35 kw) or more. Riders

who do not yet hold a full A-licence are limited to machines with a power

output of less than 50bhp for two years after passing the test.

However, any motorcycle can be restricted to fall within the limit, a

process which has little noticeable effect at legal speeds.

Machines in this range are capable of doing everything from commuting to

long-distance touring. They are ideal for solo use, although perhaps

slightly challenged for very long two-up Continental touring.

These machines are simply a fraction of a very wide range of medium

sized, medium priced machines available. They are well able to provide

affordable personal and recreational transport for second-hand car prices,

and properly looked after should give years of reliable service.

For many riders they provide the best combination of performance

with affordability.

HONDA DEAUVILLE

One of the most popular choices, this is the well-tried and tested NVT 650 with added bodywork and panniers. The NVT 650 supplanted Honda's highly successful CX 500 and, especially in London, became popular with couriers. In appearance the Deauville looks rather like a little brother to the Honda Pan European, and is now being used by the Garda as a replacement for the Kawasaki GT 550.

Transmission is by shaft drive and power output is 41 kw. A taller screen and deeper panniers make this an excellent tourer.

• Price: About €10,474.

BMW F 650

This bike has become a very popular choice. It's BMW's smallest offering, with a 652 cc single cylinder engine producing 48 bhp and is available in several guises. It's equally at home as a city commuter or a long-distance machine. I know of one which performed admirably in the American Iron Butt Rally - doing 9,000 miles in 10 days!

• Price: €8,990 to €9,460.

YAMAHA FZS 600 FAZER

This is no mean machine with a 95 bhp (69.9 kw) power output. It has gained the affection of many riders both for performance and superb roadholding. A distinctly sporty mount, it's equally at home in city traffic and twisty country roads.

• Price: €8,700

KAWASAKI ER-5

A highly popular and modestly priced machine, the ER-5 is a 500 cc single cylinder machine. A capable, confidence inspiring machine, it's as happy commuting as it is touring. It has proved popular as a first bike for those with an A licence. Power output is 50 bhp.

• Price: €5,800.
