Orla McClean Systems administrator, Rococo Software tells The Irish Times about her love of motorbikes.
What was your first machine?
A Suzuki TUX 125. I decided on a nice easy learner bike to get me used to two wheels. I only bought it this year.
What attracted you motorbikes?
The idea of getting a bike always appealed to me, but attitudes of friends and family were always very negative.
Some years ago I had spent quite a bit of time zipping around the Greek islands on mopeds - not a helmet in sight - and I loved the independence of it.
I eventually got around to buying my first bike after moving to Dublin and having to contend with a three-hour commute in the car. The bike brought the journey down to 25 minutes each way.
What did the insurance cost?
€580 for third party cover.
What do you use your bike for?
Mainly for commuting to work every day. It's not exactly suited to long trips across the Continent.
How much do you spend on gear?
Helmet €140, jacket €120, gloves €30, lock €70, trousers €40, boots €50, high visibility vest €15
What's your next bike likely to be? Something a bit bigger hopefully. I'd like to be able to do a bit of touring. I'd love a Honda Deauville.
Any advice to those thinking of getting a bike?
Do it, but take some training. It's easy to ride a bike, but a few hours with an instructor can help you ride it safely.
What can be done to improve conditions for bikers in Ireland?
Riding in the city would be a lot easier if motorcycles were allowed in the bus lanes.
