Professional photographer Jim Sweeney recalls his first motorbike, a scond-hand Honda 50
What was your first machine? A second-hand Honda 50.
What attracted you to it, and indeed motorbikes? I was only 16 and it was all I could afford at the time. My dad brought the family to all the Irish road races, both cars and bikes, but I loved bikes. I'm afraid it's in the blood.
How much did it cost? £17.10 shillings.
What is your current machine and what did it cost? A 1976 BMW R 90S. I think about £3,500.
What did the insurance cost? €350 classic cover.
What do you use your bike for? Pure fun and enjoyment.
How much do you spend on gear? About €1,200 including the luxury of the heated waistcoat for winter riding.
What is your next bike likely to be? Possibly a BMW 1150 GS. It's a great bike both on and off the road. I would love an MV Agusta, but there again I love to dream.
What's been your longest journey on the bike? To Fanad Head, Donegal and back, but I would love to tour the Continent.
Who travels with you on the bike? My daughters love to travel on the pillion. Often when we have a club run, one will travel with me on the bike, while my wife and other daughter will drive to our destination. We all have lunch together, and then the other girl will come back with me. That keeps everyone happy, especially my wife who prefers the comfort of the car.
Why do you choose BMWs? Reliability and quality, listening to enthusiastic owners singing their praises. How many bikes will look like and run as well as this one in 26 years time? Not to mention a superb owners club who organise lots of events throughout the year. Even a ladies night out.
They say that BMW bikers only talk to each other and God? Who are 'they'? Joking aside, there is great comradeship amongst "bikers". All "bikers".
