John Lynskey, Property developer, on his passion for motorbikes
What was your first machine?
A Yamaha Majesty 125 scooter. I had it for four months, before I decided to move up in the world. I got the Yamaha in January 2001 when I only had a provisional licence. It was automatic so it was very good to learn balance.
What first attracted you to motorbikes?
Hard to identify the exact attraction, but it is a combination of the great sense of freedom and the ability to get around town easily. Before getting the Yamaha there were no bikes in my life.
How much did it cost?
The Yamaha cost me £2,900.
What is your current machine?
I ride a Honda Pan European 1100 cc - better known in the US as a ST1100. It's fitted with a restricter at the moment as I just passed my test last September.
What did it cost?
Around £15,000
What did the insurance cost?
For the Yamaha, the insurance was only £350 but the Honda cost me £1,200 for fully comprehensive. Admittedly, I was only on a provisional licence when I took out the policy and I should really have contacted the insurers once I passed my test.
What do you use the machine for?
Business and pleasure. I would never use the car to get around town these days.
How much do you spend on gear?
Helmet €460; boots €260 and another pair cost me €160; gloves €50; jacket €296; trousers €260.
What is the longest journey you have taken on a motorcycle?
About 100 miles would be the longest, from Dublin to Portlaoise. I've also gone on trips to Wexford and Dundalk. The Honda is a real touring bike so I hope to do more mileage in the next while.
What is you next upgrade likely to be?
I've ordered the new Honda Pan European that I saw at the Birmingham Motor show but I'm not sure when I'll get delivery.
