Pat Hurley, Insurance Broker, on his motorbiking experiences.
What was your first machine?
A 1986 Honda Gold Wing 1200 SEI.
What attracted you to it? The bike was in good condition and had a nice few extras. I guess I always wanted one because of their touring qualities and comfort for long journeys.
How much did it cost?
€8,000
Do you believe riding skills are important?
Yes - I take advanced lessons regularly. I believe we should be improving our skills and techniques on an ongoing basis. The motorcycle test in this country is very basic and needs to be reviewed.
What did the insurance cost?
€700.
What do you use the machine for?
I use it all year round for both pleasure - and, indeed, I use it for business on some occasions.
How much do you spend on gear?
An Arai helmet €€300, a Dainese jacket €€400, trousers €250, Frank Thomas boots €200 and gloves €100.
What's you next upgrade likely to be?
The new 1800 Gold Wing . . . some day when I win the lotto!
What is the longest journey you've taken on a motorcycle? I travelled to Spain two years ago with friends. A really good trip. I would recommend it. However, it's important to remember if you are travelling as a group - ideas and places to visit should be agreed and planned out beforehand.
