Renault importer and author Bill Cullen looks back down Dublin streets to his first car
What was your first car?
My first car was a Ford Cortina 1964, HZH666.
What did you pay for it?
Zilcho - company car.
Was it reliable?
Fantastically.
Any good or bad memories?
It was a blue car with a white side flash. A wonderful thrill to drive down the streets of old Dublin.
Big improvement on former modes of transportation - the box-car, the hoop and the number 23 bus.
Did it greatly affect your social or business life?
Sure! When you drove a car 40 years ago it was a sure sign you were going places.
Did your first car give you a feeling of advantage over other friends who relied on the bicycle or public transport?
Friends certainly came out of the woodwork for a lift to the seaside, football matches, and the like.
How long did you keep your first car?
Six months - normal demo period.
Did you sell it on for a better deal?
Moved up to a Cortina 1600E.
