Alfa Romeo's current GTV and Spider are now looking very elderly, but replacements - based on the same underpinnings as the upcoming 157 - are set for launch at next spring's Geneva Motor Show, with sales starting in the summer.

The Italian car-maker is currently doing extensive testing at Germany's Nürburgring racetrack. The photo (above) shows for the first time a prototype of the all-new upcoming Alfa GTV.

Though it has design elements from the Brera concept (above right), we're still inclined to believe it's a successor to the GTV.

The Spider version will be equipped with a classic canvas top. Technical features and styling are the same as the GTV coupe, but it will come on the market one year later.

While the current models are only available as front-wheel drive, the next-generation GTV and Spider will offer four-wheel-drive as an option. Expect 2.0 JTS four-cylinder and 3.2 V6 JTS petrol engines, but a diesel is unlikely in this line-up. Spider versions, to be called GTC, will follow on sale slightly later.
