Quality and reliability:

We know nothing of the car's reliability just yet, but judging it purely on build quality and finish alone, the Insignia scores highly.

Fleet sales will be hugely important to Opel, and this car needs to be built to last but first impressions are very impressive.

Performance:

The 115bhp 1.6-litre will be adequate, with most petrol buyers opting for the 140bhp 1.8. Performance fans are catered for by a 220bhp 2.0-litre turbo and, at the top of the range, a 260bhp 2.8-litre V6 Turbo. The diesels are likely to be the most popular, with two versions of a great 2.0-litre common rail diesel putting out 130bhp and 160bhp.

At the wheel:

Probably the only car that we have come across that can potentially match the Mondeo when it comes to sheer driving dynamism. Insignia boasts a nice blend of agility and comfort, and while we have yet to try it on Irish roads, we are pretty sure it will be good.

Space and comfort:

The Insignia's cabin is a really nice place to spend time, with a terrific finish to it. The seats are really excellent too. Headroom for taller adults in the rear will be compromised slightly by the sloping roof.

Safety:

Scored a massive result in the Euro NCAP safety tests, almost getting a maximum score for adult occupancy protection. Comes with a full array of safety equipment including six airbags, ESP, belt-force limiters and Isofix child seat mounts.

Running costs and depreciation:

We can't guess on residual value yet, since this is such a new car. Lowest CO2 emissions are to be found on the 2.0-litre diesel, with 154g/km making it Band C.

THE CONCLUSIONS:

For:great looks, nice quality and good to drive

Against:restricted rear headroom

Irish Times verdict:European Car of the Year winner will push Mondeo hard this year
