Mazda's new-generation rotary engine, which powers its all-new RX-8 sports car, has been named International Engine of the Year 2003.

With an impressive 44 out of 50 votes, the Mazda rotary unit also won the 2.5-litre to 3.0-litre Capacity Class Award, and Best New Engine of 2003.

The title of Best Fuel Economy engine on the market went to Honda's Civic IMA (Integrated Motor Assist) engine. Honda's S2000 and the Honda 1.0-litre Insight IMA hybrid engines also won awards.

BMW, the most successful manufacturer in the event's five-year history, won commendations for the MINI Supercharged 1.6-litre (Cooper S), the BMW 2.5-litre (325i, 525i, Z4) and the BMW 3.2-litre (M3).

The awards are hosted by Engine Technology International every year, with the winner selected by a majority vote of 50 motoring journalists from 22 countries around the world.
