Strong on style but not safety

Second Hand Sense : AS AN MPV, the Chrysler Voyager has some very strong attributes

Second Hand Sense: AS AN MPV, the Chrysler Voyager has some very strong attributes. It has more interior space than most of its competitors; its sliding doors make for very easy entry and egress, and its styling offers a good deal more appeal than that of more conventional cars.

However, the Voyager cancels out many of its virtues with problems of reliability, a poor crash test history and handling that is more minibus than car.

It’s been a favourite with private chauffeuring services, but its public appeal has been less positive. While Ford and others have manufactured much more family-friendly MPVs, the Voyager has suffered because earlier versions had heavy rear seats that were difficult to remove.

In 2004 a system for stowing the last row of seats was introduced, allowing the option of completely flat rear space without all the hassle of getting them in and out.

The Voyager is far more cleverly designed inside than some of its competitors. Seats are strong and supportive and will take plenty of wear and tear from children.

The Voyager has been heavily criticised for its propensity to roll when pushed. There is a choice of engines, ranging from a 2.4 petrol to 2.5 and 2.8 diesels. The 2.5 diesel is now the preferred option.

Where things start to go wrong for the Voyager is with its safety record. Its first Euro-NCAP crash test was a very poor one so it was a surprise to learn that its test in 2007 was not a great deal better. Its overall three star award was downgraded to two stars because of its very low scoring for potential injuries to the driver and the front seat passenger.

The list of faults places the Voyager way behind on safety innovation. A crash test like this really precludes one from considering the Voyager as a family vehicle – the purpose for which it was originally intended.

A 2006 version of the non-runner 2.4 petrol is on offer for €16,950 and the price itself is a non-runner. A 2.5 diesel of the same age and with 57,000km on the clock is on offer for €19,950. A 2007 2.8 diesel with 21,000km and with seven seats is at another garage at €26,950.
