JARGON PATROL: Prepare yourself for the world of the radio-heads. We've all seen the images of cars with the boot full of speakers and wires, rocking down the road emitting more decibels than a medium-sized nuclear explosion. What's more, the owners of said vehicles use a language and jargon unintelligible to the rest of us. Yet many of us have just such systems built in to our household stereos and even the cars.
Sub-woofers and woofers: The names are used interchangeably but they are basically the same thing. These essentially provide that deep thud in the sound and are most commonly used by boy racers who like their car to bounce to the rhhym of the music.
Woofers concentrate on low frequencies down to those inaddible to the human ear. They give that really low deep sound (man). It only deals with bass and has no impact on the treble. If you want the windows to shake and the earth to move then sub-woofers are the way ahead.
Tweeters: As the name suggests these are in the area of high level frequencies and enhance the high pitched notes from either violins, oboes and those opera sopranos who aim to crack the windows in the car rather than shake them.
If you are the more discerning music fan then it is in the tweeters that you will be placing greater emphasis.
