Volkswagen Ireland is recalling 1,256 of its Polo small cars with 1.2-litre 70bhp diesel engines producted between 2010 and 2014 over potential leaks in the fuel line.
The recall also affects Skoda Fabia and Roomster models, along with certain Seat cars, which are powered by the same 1.2-litre TDI engine and built within the same time period.
According to a Volkswagen statement: “in isolated cases, because of the pressure pulsations in the fuel lines and the engine pulsations when driving, vibrations can be transmitted to the cover of the fuel filter. This can crack the filter cover in the area of the supply neck can lead to a fuel smell inside the vehicle and a leak of diesel fuel.”
In extreme circumstances such leaks could lead to a risk of fire.
A spokesman said letters will be sent to owners of the affected vehicles where they will be asked to arrange an appointment to have the work completed at their authorised Volkswagen service agent. Any work carried out as part of this recall will be free of charge to the customer.
