Opera buffs may want to plan a weekend in Co Cork around Verdi’s La Traviata, being performed by the London Garden Opera Company in Burren House on Saturday, September 11th. Soloists from Covent Garden, Scottish Opera and English National Opera will sing Verdi’s universal story of Violetta (played by Elizabeth Woods, pictured, with Christopher Diffey, who will play Alfredo), who is transformed from hedonistic courtesan to tragic heroine. Director Saffron van Zwanenberg has set the opera in 1930s Paris.

This is the third year for Burren Opera, which this year aims to raise €15,000 for Marymount Hospice and the Cheshire Home in Cork, with all proceeds going to the charities. Spectators are encouraged to bring their own picnics or to purchase food and wine from the barbecue and the wine bar. Tickets, €67 each (€62 for seniors), can be booked through the Everyman Palace Cork on 021-4501673 or at everymanpalace.com. burrenhouse.net.
