One year on from the earthquake that killed hundreds of thousands of people, almost flattened the capital city, Port-au-Prince, and made 1.5 million homeless, the survivors of the Haiti disaster are still standing, and fighting to regain their homes, their livelihoods and their sense of hope for the future. Just some of these resilient souls have been recorded by some of Ireland’s leading photographers.
"Valerie O'Sullivan, Julien Behal, Mark Condron, Jerry Kennelly, George Doyle, Barry Murphy and myself spent a week in Haiti in October photographing for Goal and Soul of Haiti Charities. The first anniversary of the earthquake is on January 11th and so this year's calendar is all based on Haiti," says Alan Betson of The Irish Times, who has three photographs in the calendar, including the one on the right, which shows Guirlee Francois and Charlanola Dexis in the ruins of their earthquake-damaged house as Goal engineers prepare to build them a new semi-permanent shelter. The charity calendar is widely available and costs €7.95.
