The Oscars had a certain green tinge to them this year – largely in the animation and special effects realm. Five Irish were nominated, but in the end only Richard Baneham (second from right) got a statuette for his part in creating the special effects for gazillion-dollar 3D spectacular Avatar. He thanked everyone who, throughout his life, encouraged him to continue on an unconventional career. The rest of the Irish nominees were magmanimous despite losing out, and were no doubt helped by a massive Irish party in a nearby bar.

It was the richest poker tournament in Europe, so perhaps it wasn’t a surprise that a Berlin game was raided this week – a farcical scene caught on internet cameras. On Saturday, the European Tournament was interrupted by four armed robbers, who shouted “It’s a hold up!” The thieves threw €800,000 into hold-alls, only for one hotel intern to grab a bag containing most of it and run away. After struggling with security guards, they left with about €200,000 and appreciation for a calm game of patience.
