Earlier this year, Limerick man Seán McGowan (pictured) accomplished something extraordinary – he became the first Irish man to row solo across the Atlantic. During his epic 118-day voyage, McGowan braved massive storms, severe food shortages, close encounters with big whales and even bigger ships, and above all intense loneliness. The money he raised went towards the Soweto Connection charity.
But now McGowan is looking for a sponsor to help bring his beloved boat, Tess, back from Antigua – he hopes to do a tour of schools with the rowboat, telling students around the country about his inspirational journey and the lessons that can be learned from such perseverance and determination. The cost of bringing Tess home comes to €1,800, and although McGowan will ultimately have to sell her, he hopes somebody in Ireland will be interested in purchasing this little bit of Irish history – all the offers so far have come from foreign bidders.
Anybody interested in sponsoring Tess’s return can contact McGowan at sean@atlantic09.com.
