CALLING... all those who work in the voluntary sector

CALLING . . .all those who work in the voluntary sector. I can't think of a better time to take a career break in order to pursue a charitable cause close to your heart, but doing good for others doesn't often pay the bills.

That's why I am delighted to be involved for the third year with Vodafone's World of Difference scheme, which offers four people the chance to work with the charitable organisation of their choice for a salary of up to €40,000 per year. Myself, broadcasters Ray D'Arcy and Claire Byrne, along with the Dragon Den's Gavin Duffy, are charged with picking the successful applicants. Closing date for entries is February 20th. www.vodafoneirelandfoundation.ie.

WATCHING . . . Christianity: A Historyon Channel 4, Sunday nights. Howard Jacobson, a writer and member of the Jewish faith, kicked off this fascinating eight-part series. Next up tomorrow night is Michael Portillo's take on Roman emperor Constantine.
