In vino value: August is a good month for wine bargains, as, with customers dispersed to resorts far away, off-licences seek to clear their shelves for the Christmas splurge. The Celtic Whiskey Shop, on Dawson Street, Dublin 2, has a number of very interesting bin ends, such as the rich and gorgeous mocha-and-berry mixture of Prieuré Saint-Jean de Bébian 1997, from the Coteaux du Languedoc, reduced from €29.99 to €19.99.

Uisce bargain: Nourish health-food stores have a special offer on Volvic water: 59c for 500ml or €1.15 for 1.5l. This compares with €1.39 for a 500ml bottle in a convenience store just down the road from the Nourish on Wicklow Street.

Cook for less: Arnotts is selling the superb Stellar 7000 five-piece saucepan set with stockpot for €159.95. As the original price was €334, this is a substantial saving. Visit the shop on Henry Street, Dublin 1, or see www.buy4now.ie/arnotts to find out more about this and many other bargains.

Silk scarves on sale: Ciaran Sweeney's gorgeous scarves are owned by the likes of Madonna, Kylie Minogue and President Mary McAleese. You have a chance to join that eclectic list this weekend, when Sweeney hosts a sale from his studio, in Dublin. This is a rare opportunity to visit his Liberties base and get up to 80 per cent off his unique fashion and home accessories, which are normally available only from high-end stores. Sweeney's studio is in the IDA centre, 12 Newmarket  Square, Dublin 8. For more details call 01-4113953 or visit www.ciaransweeney.com .
