Creed from €68.50 from Nue Blue Eriu. More celebrity followers than Santa has elves. Particular treats are Fleurissimo, created from the scent of Princess Grace's bridal bouquet and Ava Gardner's favourite, Fleurs de Thé Rose Bulgare.

Stella by Stella McCartney, from €35 at counters countrywide. Ms McCartney's mates Gwynnie and Madonna are fans of this ultra-feminine, rose fragrance that works well throughout the year.

Diptyue from €48 at Brown Thomas. The variety within this collection means you can do all your Christmas shopping in one swoop. If buying for Sophie Dahl, snap up a Freesia candle, Claudia Schiffer would like anything in Tuberose, and Nicole Kidman can't resist a bottle of Olène eau de toilette.

Jo Malone, from €48 at Brown Thomas. Everyone loves receiving a cream box with the tell-tale black grosgrain ribbon, and celebrities are no exception. This year, Sarah Jessica Parker will be angling for the coffee-scented Black Vetiver Café, while actress Kate Bosworth has been dropping hints to boyfriend Orlando Bloom for the recently-launched Vintage Gardenia perfume. Beyoncé, meanwhile, will apparently forgo her own perfume endorsements for a spritz of Tuberose.

DKNY, €48 from counters countrywide. Boho Barbies will no doubt clamour to join 2004's celeb de jour Sienna Miller at the counter for this timeless winner that includes essence of tomato leaf and, somewhat unbelievably, "white T-shirt", in its composition.

Bobbi Brown Baby, €45 from Brown Thomas. Very American, and a guaranteed winner across many age groups, this light, fresh perfume has a sufficiently unique personality to offer just enough stand-out appeal. Jade Jagger's a recent convert.

Sisley Eau de Soir, from €70 at Brown Thomas. A really sophisticated fragrance created by Sisley's Count Hugo d'Ornand for his wife Christine, to remind her of the gardens of Alcazar. In a special Murano glass bottle for Christmas 2004, it's on Goldie Hawn's list.

Marc Jacob's Essence, €70.50 from counters countrywide. Liv Tyler and Kirsten Dunst epitomise the character of this gardenia-based floral. His latest, Blush, is an equally alluring scent, but with more ethereal properties.

Prada from €48 at Dublin Airport. New, feminine and quite quirky, the old-school atomiser attached to the bottle is a nice retro twist. Jennifer Aniston snapped up a bottle to wear at the Golden Globes.

Clean from €79 at Brown Thomas. Smells just as it says on the bottle. Savvy style setters who love this "just out of the shower" scent include Kristen Davis, Blu Cantrell and Cameron Diaz.

Other fab fragrances: L'Artisan Perfumerie's Mûre Extreme smells of fresh blackberries. The distinctive Comme Des Garçons Incense range may evoke memories of grand cathedrals (Avignon being the most distinctive of the five-strong collection).

Teenagers adore BeneFit's fruity/floral Maybe Baby. Gaultier's Fragile comes in perfect festive packaging - a glamorous golden snowglobe. Dolce and Gabbana's Light Blue reveals itself beautifully over time.

Chanel No 5, the classic scent recently funded the £18 million ad by Baz Luhrmann and a £2 million fee for Ms Kidman. Go figure. Chanel No 19, Cristalle, Coco and Chance also have long-lasting appeal. From €55.50.

For him: Burberry Brit - launched this autumn - is a stunning, memorable floral. Richard James is a Savile Row tailor whose first fragrance is contemporary, sexy and utterly unique. Diptyque's Tam Dao turns the very masculine sandlewood into a heavenly scent.
