Egyptians watch the trial on TV. Mr Morsi struck a defiant tone on the first day of the trial, chanting 'Down with military rule', and calling himself the country's only 'legitimate' president. Mr Morsi, an Islamist who was toppled by the army in July after mass protests against him, appeared angry and interrupted the session repeatedly. Mr Morsi and his colleagues rejected the authority of the court before the bedlam forced the presiding judge to adjourn proceedings until January 8th. Photograph: Mohamed Abd El Ghany/Reuters
