A profoundly disabled girl who suffered severe injuries arising out of the circumstances of her birth at Sligo General Hospital in 1983 is to be paid £1.1 million under the terms of a settlement approved by Mr Justice Lavan in the High Court. Wheelchair-bound Aideen Henry, now aged 14, had taken an action against the North Western Health Board. She now lives with her parents in Birmingham and had taken the case through her mother, Mrs Deirdre Henry, of Jayshaw Avenue, Great Barr, Birmingham, and formerly of Co Sligo. It was alleged when Aideen was delivered, the board, which had responsibility for the hospital, failed to provide adequate or skilled professional assistance to treat her respiratory depression and asphyxia and to provide oxygen support. The NWHB denied it was negligent or in breach of duty. It also denied failing to provide assistance to treat the baby after delivery or that it failed to provide oxygen support.
