Garda inquiries into the murders of two elderly female psychiatric patients in the Grangegorman area of Dublin involve 1,200 statements, a court heard yesterday. Mr Dean Lyons (24), of Castlepark, Tallaght, is accused of murdering one of the women, Ms Mary Callinan (61), at Orchard View on March 6th last.

Sgt Robert McNulty said the book of evidence was not yet ready as there were 1,200 statements to go through.

Mr Garret Sheehan, a solicitor, asked that the Garda inquiry be speeded up and consented to a month's remand in custody for Mr Lyons who is due to appear again on October 18th.

Mr Lyons was separately charged yesterday with two robberies in Dublin city centre in which cash and goods worth £730 were taken.
