Miami - Ten people have been arrested in Miami on charges of spying for the Cuban government, US federal officials said yesterday.
The 10 were arrested "for espionage conducted on behalf of the government of Cuba," the US Attorney's office in Miami said in a statement.
Mr John Schlesinger, spokesman for the US Attorney's office, said it was a major case. "It's huge," he declared.
Leaders of Cuban exile organisations in Miami said the alleged espionage was related to the 1996 shooting down of two aircraft flown by the exile group Brothers to the Rescue by Cuban MiGs. Four people were killed in the incident, which set off an international furore.
