Five people died in road accidents in the North during the Easter weekend, and five were killed in the Republic

Five people died in road accidents in the North during the Easter weekend, and five were killed in the Republic. A sixth person in the North died from his injuries at Easter.

Of the four men and one woman who lost their lives in separate road accidents in the Republic three were on motorcycles.

On Thursday Mr Tony Cronin (29), of Newpark, Kilkenny, died after his motorcycle collided with a truck on the main Cahir-Mitchelstown road, at Ballinatona, Kilbehenny, Co Limerick, at around 3 p.m. The second motorcycle accident occurred the following day, claiming the life of 32-year-old Ms Marie Duffy, from Drogheda.

She died when her motorcycle was in a collision with a car and a jeep on the N7 motorway at Mayfield, Monasterevin, Co Kildare.

The third motorcycle crash occurred in Co Sligo on Monday when a 24-year-old man lost control of his motorcycle at the Mall, Sligo. His name has not yet been released.

Also at the weekend 20-year-old Mr Gary Cotter, of Kilrush, Co Clare, died after his car crashed at Moyasta, Kilrush, early on Saturday.

Mr John Kearns (79), of Ballymore Eustace, Co Kildare, lost his life after the car he was driving crashed at Gowran Grange on Sunday.

In the North the latest deaths bring the total killed on the roads there to 44, four down on the same period last year.

The dead included Mr Robert Terence Houston (49), of Macosquin, Co Derry.

He died when his bicycle was in a collision with a car in Coleraine just after midnight yesterday. In Belfast Mr Seán Kane (19), from the Twinbrook estate in west Belfast, died following an accident in Dunmurry on Saturday evening.

It is reported that he was struck by a car after he stepped off the pavement.

He was taken to the Royal Victoria Hospital but died from his injuries on Sunday.

A teenager who was in an accident involving a moped in west Belfast earlier this month also died on Sunday.

His name has not been released, but it is understood he was in an accident near Andersonstown Leisure Centre in west Belfast on April 3rd.

In Co Armagh a man died following a car accident at Killylea Road, Armagh, on Saturday night.

One vehicle was involved. His name has not been released.

In another accident, Mr David Kearney (24), of Hollymount, Newtownards, died after the car he was driving crashed at Holywood Road in the town on Friday. No other vehicle was involved.

On the same day a teenager died from injuries sustained in an accident in Crossmaglen, in south Armagh. He was Declan Reel (16), Garvey's Road, Dorsey, Cullyhanna.
