A Dublin man who is serving three 10-year jail sentences has been jailed for a further 10 years for his role in a series of bank, supermarket and petrol station robberies.

Christopher Gilroy (27), of Blessington Street, Dublin, was on bail when he went on a crime rampage. He pleaded guilty to six counts of robbery and one of attempted robbery on various dates in 1998 and 1999 in counties Galway, Westmeath, Tipperary, Kilkenny, Laois and Dublin. More than £32,000 was taken in the crimes. At Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, Judge Frank O'Donnell noted he had to take 11 other charges into consideration. Three of these were for possession of firearms.

Weapons used by Gilroy and accomplices included knives, a pistol, a sawn-off shot gun, an umbrella, a screwdriver and two pieces of copper piping welded together to look like a gun.
