A printer whose arm was injured in an accident at the former Irish Press in Dublin was awarded damages of £118,658 and costs by the High Court yesterday.
Mr John Roche (66), of Raheny, sued Irish Press plc over the accident on May 21st, 1992. He was injured while feeding paper into a printing machine with the rollers running in a "crawl" position. The machine caught his right arm and crushed it.
In a reserved judgment Mr Justice Carney said he was satisfied the chronic depression Mr Roche suffered resulted from the terrifying nature of the accident.
He awarded £30,000 in general damages to date and £40,000 for general damages in the future; £31,068 for net loss of wages, including overtime, up to the date of the closure of the Irish Press; and £17,590 special damages.
He refused a stay on the order in the event of an appeal. If a stay was wanted, counsel could take instructions and come back to court, he said.
